is heating up in alameda county. new at noon, allie rasmus joins us live in oakland to explain what the sheriffs want to do with the drones and why the aclu opposes the plan. >> reporter: well, today, the alameda county supervisors were supposed to consider whether to allow the sheriff's office to buy a drone or as the sheriff says, he prefers to call it, an unmanned aerial device. but the item was taken off the supervisors' agenda, just as a couple of civil liberties groups had a press conference expressing concerns. the alameda county sheriff's office unveiled what they might purchase, this device. in the past month, alameda county received around $31,000 in state grant money to buy an unmanned aerial system known to some as a drone. the devices have live hd quality video and infrared capability. and that's raising the concerns of civil liberties groups. >> we have nothing on paper that will bind the sheriff and accountability methods to prevent privacy issues. so we should not be rushing into this. >> it's law enforcement's job to protect people's privacy and to think we would us

of oakland raiders head coach dennis allen has died. allen had been away from the team since sunday to be with his father in the dallas area. we are told 66-year-old grady allen died last night from heart complications. he was a linebacker for the falcons from 1968 to 1972. dennis allen does plan though to return to oakland to coach thursday's home game against the denver broncos. >>> activists on both side of the gay marriage issue on california are learning to be patient. it turns out a prop 8 appeal will be on the u.s. supreme court justices' agenda again this friday. but it doesn't mean they will act on it. the court has no deadline for acting on cases. the court made the announcement this morning saying several gay marriage appeals are still on the table. friday is the fourth time that prop 8 and other cases concerning the "defense of marriage act" will be on the justices' agenda. we should know by friday afternoon or next monday morning if the judges issue an order this time. >>> a federal judge is blocking the state from enforcing its gay therapy law set to go into effect on

is in the northeast part of oakland. there's a massive sinkhole there. chad myers is in the cnn weather center watching these storms as they develop. dan, let me start with you. what's the story on the sinkhole? >> reporter: well, as you said, ashleigh, it is a real mess out here. let me show you what's going on. you can see crews here removing some of the debris. this is a massive sinkhole. this is 80 feet long, 15 feet deep, 40 feet wide. let me explain how this happened. there's a creek that runs beneath the concrete, and it got clogged up and it just washed away all the dirt, and with that the road. you got the whole street closed. it's going to be closed for several months. what crews had to do, they actually had to set up a temporary sewer line. you can see it right here because when the street gave way, it actually ruptured the line. this is the temporary line, also a temporary water line. lafayette where we are, it's about 20 miles east of san francisco, and the whole bay area has been impacted by a series of storms. the storm that's coming tonight, this will be the fourth storm in abo
of oakland, where there is this huge, huge sinkhole. i'm guessing you're standing somewhere near it, dan. show me what it is and how they're going to fix it. >> reporter: yeah, hey, brook, we're standing in the middle of this enormous sinkhole in lafayette, california, about 20 miles east of san francisco. you can see some of the crews here clearing away the debris. let me explain to you how this happened. there is actually a creek that runs underneath this, or it did. and it basically got clogged and it tore away all the dirt, all the mud, and with it brought down the street. you can see the entire street basically caved in, no traffic going on either side. this is a major inconvenience for the people who live in this neighborhood. you can see one of the things that crews had to do is they had to set up a temporary sewer line. also a temporary water line. this is one of the lines here, they went to extraordinary lengths to make sure that the people in this neighborhood aren't affected in terms of their basic services. now, this was one of the storms that came by, just a couple of days a
